A play adapted by Alexandra Wood based on the book by Kate Summerscale
Where and When
18th – 28th February 2027 @ The Tivoli Theatre, Wimborne
The Plot
Summer, 1860. The Georgian manor house in the village of Road, Wiltshire, awakes to the discovery of a brutal murder: a three-year old child is dead and at least one member of the household must be responsible.
Fuelled by graphic accounts in Broadsheets and “Penny-Dreadfuls,” the crime holds the nation in gruesome enthrallment. Insanity, infidelity and jealousy seem powerful motives in this harrowing mystery.
Metropolitan Police Inspector, Jack Whicher, has the unenviable task of bringing the killer to justice. The case haunts him for the rest of his life. In this drama, Whicher revisits the events at Road Hill House to review the verdict and satisfy himself that his original conclusions were correct. Who could possibly be guilty of such depravity?
Based Kate Summerscale’s award winning book, this stage adaptation untangles the web of interconnected events that led to this heinous, Victorian crime. Directed by Suzanne Viney, this is an amateur production by arrangement with Nick Hern Books.
